COWRIE
New Graduate and Postgraduate Awards for Environmental Research into Marine Renewable Energy
COWRIE Ltd is pleased to announce that it will be offering annual Awards for the best individual project or thesis work in environmental science related to the marine renewables industry.
Categories
There are two categories of Award, each Award being a value of £750:
- Individual projects completed by final year undergraduates (and submitted in academic year 2005-06)
- Individual projects completed by MSc. Students (and submitted in academic year 2005-06)
Invitations to Universities to nominate student projects and advertise the Awards scheme will be circulated in October 2006.
The deadline for submission of nominations is November 30th 2006.
Scope of Awards:
The scope of the Awards covers the broad area of environmental science. They are applicable to much of the work carried out in marine biology and ecology, oceanography, data management, marine environmental science, marine resource management (including marine spatial planning or consideration of stakeholder issues) and related courses of study.
Eligibility
Projects eligible for submission must have been completed by an individual student during the academic year 2005-6 as part of the course requirements of a recognised course at a UK University.
Projects based on group-work are not eligible for nomination.
Research relating to offshore wind, wave and tidal energy are eligible for the Awards.
Submission Process
Individual students are required to complete the Nomination form which can be downloaded here.
Submissions must be accompanied by a signed recommendation for submission from the Course Director or Project Tutor, and shall be returned by post to the COWRIE Secretariat (for address see the Nomination form).
Completed forms should include:
- a short synopsis of the project
- an assessment of its application potential to the marine renewables sector
- an appraisal of the quality of the work and of the student
The submission should be no longer than two pages of A4.
Completed forms sent to the COWRIE Secretariat must be received by 12 noon on 30th November 2006.
Assessment Process
Nominations will be assessed by a Selection Panel including members of the COWRIE Board and COWRIE Working Groups
A short-list of a maximum of 5 projects for each category will be drawn up, and an electronic copy of the full project work or thesis will be requested from the student or University tutor.
Projects on the short list must be submitted to COWRIE by December 31st 2006.
The final Assessment process will take place in January 2007 and winners announced at the beginning of February.
The winning projects in each category will be published on the COWRIE website and the winning student will be given the opportunity to present their work at a COWRIE related event or a BWEA Conference (COWRIE will cover expenses).
