Earlier this year, Cowrie supported free workshops for primary School Students. The events were run by the Marine Biological Association and the National Marine Aquarium.
The project was designed to promote the need for offshore windfarms and the work of COWRIE to school children around the country.
The project was divided into two key elements, which were:
1. Life Around the Turbines School Workshops and
2. Life Around the Turbines Education resources for the Cowrie website
Both elements were designed to work together and to fit in with the English National Curriculum for Key Stage 2 for a range of subjects, including Science, Design Technology and Citizenship, covering the themes:
-
Habitats, Adaptation and Foodwebs – exploring the species and habitats found around wind farms and how these species are connected by food web
-
Wind turbines and the Environment – Examining the planning process associated with responsible windfarm developments and the different issues that need to be address before a development can take place.
-
How Turbines work – Learning about the workings of a wind turbine and the need for renewable energy.
The workshops were completely free to participating schools and the uptake has been fantastic. All of the workshops are linked to free supporting teacher resources, activity sheets and a interactive seabed that can be found on the Education section of this website.
